BESTSELLERS - March 27th, 2008

Hot News for Lucy Dawson’s debut novel HIS OTHER LOVER! Number 2 on The Bookseller’s Heatseaker Chart!

Lucy Dawson’s stunning debut, HIS OTHER LOVER, is just published by the Sphere paperback imprint of Little, Brown and is fulfilling our expectations to be Sphere’s biggest women’s fiction of 2008! They reprinted ahead of publication, and had 50,000 copies shipped to stores. HIS OTHER LOVER sold 2077 copies in the first week, 6188 copies in the second week, and is now at #38 on The Times Top 50 Bestseller list (one of the only debut novels on the entire list)! All the bookstore chains (Waterstones, W.H. Smiths, etc.) and supermarkets confirmed big orders and promotions. And this was even before the sensational first, five-star review in Heat magazine!

“Lucy Dawson’s debut novel puts every woman’s nightmare into words. Should Mia leave him, or fight for her man? You’ll identify with the character, regardless of the choices she ends up making. You’ll feel her distress as she attempts to deal with the deceit that surrounds her. You’ll turn the pages in anticipation as she attempts to pull off her plan for revenge. Can she win Pete back? And when it comes to wiping Liz out of their lives, what lengths will Mia go to? HIS OTHER LOVER is dark, compelling and will leave you with an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach. You’ll be kept guessing about what lies in store for Mia, right until the bitter end.”

I don’t usually have the same taste as Heat magazine, but in this case I completely agree. I was riveted from start to finish when I read Lucy’s manuscript last year and I still think about the unsettling ending. So far German rights are sold to Rowohlt Taschenbuch and Dutch rights to House of Books. US rights just sold to Avon! Lucy Dawson is off to a brilliant start as a star of women’s fiction - hooray for Lucy and for her primary agent, Sarah Ballard, who believed in this novel from its earliest stages!

Robert Low’s Vikings Battle Up the Charts!

Robert Low’s THE WOLF SEA, his second novel in a thrilling historical adventure series is just published in hardcover by HarperCollins and stealthily climbing up the bestseller list, aiming for the top 20! The first book in the series, THE WHALE ROAD, was a bestseller in both hardcover and paperback last year, and Robert Low’s primary agent, Jim Gill, has sold Susan Watt/HarperCollins, a third book, THE WHITE RAVEN (for hardcover pub. in March 2009, paperback in August 2009). Robert Low recently completed the fourth book, THE PROW BEAST(for hardcover pub. in March 2010 and paperback August 2010) and this will conclude the series.

Robert Low has already drawn praise from Bernard Cornwell: “A company of warriors, desperate battles, an enthralling read” and Simon Scarrow: “A fantastic book, one of the best I have read for years. There’s wonderful earthiness to proceedings and he creats a tangible sense of being there. There’s a sturdy, lyrical and epic quality about the writing which makes it feel like the kind of saga a Viking would recount in his old age.” Robert Low could easily pass for a Viking - he spent his youth reporting from warzones and when he retired to Scotland to be closer to his wife and daughter he missed his life as a man of action and took up Viking re-enactment, spending his summers fighting in helmet and mail all over Britain, and his winters training hard. St. Martin’s Press is publishing Robert Low in the US, and all translation rights are available - a must-read for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Tim Severin, and Conn Iggulden! You can read more about Robert Low and his fantastic series at his website.

Fiona Neill’s THE SECRET LIFE OF A SLUMMY MUMMY (scroll down to my first posting below) continues to sell, climbing back up the paperback bestseller list to #9! Rights are still available in Spain/Latin America, Finland, Brazil, Eastern Europe (except for Czech and Polish), Turkey…
